Today, one billion people do not have an access to safe and affordable drinking water, and 2.4 billion people live in conditions
lacking adequate sanitation. Each year about 4 million people die of waterborne diseases, including 2 million children who die of diarrhea.
More than 800 million people, 15% of the world population are malnourished, due in part to insufficient and clean drinking water.
The world health organisation has estimated that 1.1 billion people still lacked access to a safe water supply, but over twice as
many people, 2.4 billion lack access to basic sanitation. the world’s population is expected to increase from 6.1 billion to 7.2 billion by
2015 and 62% of people in the rural areas in developing countries will not have access to sanitation, compared with 14% in urban areas. In
total, more people will lack basic sanitation in urban areas by 2015, due to rapid urbanisation.
Inadequate water and sanitation as we all know is a cause to several diseases, most of which are transmitted from faeces to humans
via contaminated hands, soil, water, animals and insects.
Increasing access to water and sanitation is a key component of development and poverty reduction, as it has major health benefits as well as associated social, economic and environmental benefits.
Sierra Leone is ranked amongst the world’s poorest
countries with the highest maternity and infant mortality rate. The country’s water consumption exceeds 60% of the usable supply and also lacks the storage and transport facilities. as well as there is a need for the provision and supply of an adequate
quantity of water for consumption, we will also create the provision for an adequate
quality of water and sanitation that will minimize the health impacts, such as water-borne diseases especially after the war. By so doing, we will focus on pesticides, industrial chemicals and other environmental health threats.
