In Kroo Bay, (one of the slums in the City) more than 200 people access their fresh water from just one pump.
A land lord owns 20 homes in the area, all 200 occupants of the area uses that single pump and he said the problem of access to water has created tension and frustration in the area.
"People come from all over this area to get water," he said. "During the dry season, people suffer a lot.
At times, people sleep without washing." The land Lord said those living in the area are existing like slaves and many of them are reduced to begging for water because access is so scarce.
In the city of Freetown, only 45 per cent of residents have regular access to fresh water and fewer than that number receive pipe-borne water.
The Land lord further said he expected the former Member of Parliament for this area to have built at least three more water pumps, but none were built.
"This is not the way to do politics. Nobody has ever come here to talk to us and nothing has been done for us in terms of development." Another Kroo Bay resident said she does her laundry only when it rains allowing her to clean her clothes. She said it is frustrated because there has been little discussion of development issues in the election campaign and she feels the concerns of people like her are ignored by politicians.
Another Kroo Bay resident also said he normally waits to wash himself in the rains - happy because he is finally able to clean himself after several days if not months of not having fresh water.
"For many years back there has only been that single pump. He said ‘This is how severe it is in Sierra Leone Today’. - PLEASE HELP he said.
